Automatic IPv6 Provisioning

Introduction

The IPv6 automatic supply functionality in the IXC ACS is an advanced solution for efficient management of large-scale network devices. This functionality simplifies IPv6 activation and monitoring on multiple devices, reducing the need for individual manual settings.

Access to Functionality

Way: Tools Menu → Automatic provisioning

Goals of Functionality

  1. Reduce manual operations in IPv6 activation
  2. Apply uniform settings across the network
  3. Identify devices with IPv6 support without assigned address
  4. Organisation IPv6 assets to improve performance and reduce demand for support

Benefits

1. Process Automation

  • Simultaneous configuration of multiple devices
  • Significant saving of time and resources

# # 2. Increased reliability

  • Standardization in the configuration application
  • Reduction of human errors

3. IPv4 Shortage Resolution

  • Efficient migration for IPv6
  • Scalable and sustainable solution
  • Encouraging customers to adopt IPv6
  • Suitable configuration for services that benefit from IPv6

Settings

Provision Activation

  1. Access: Tools Menu → Automatic provisioning
  2. Enable provisioning in the upper right corner
  3. Choose between:

-Where possible: Checks IPv6 in all interactions with CHA. Whenever the device communicates with the ACS (according to the configured reporting time), it will check if the IPv6 is enabled. If not, you will send the parameter for activation.

  • On restart: Activate IPv6 when the device restarts. In some Huawei and Zyxel models, IPv6 can be lost after restarting. To correct this failure, the functionality detects the absence of IPv6 and the reactive automatically.
Important

Automatic provisioning screen data are collected every 30 minutes, including information such as devices with or without IPv6, period activations, among others.

IPv6 Configuration

To view the IPv6 configuration on the network, click the gear icon, located next to the enabled button, at the top right corner of the screen. Clicking on this button, you will be directed to the IPv6 settings dialog to set IPv6 settings:

-DHCP: ONT automatically receives an IP address from a DHCP server.

  • SLAAC (automatic): ONT configures your IP address automatically based on network information.
  • None: ONT does not acquire an IPv6 address by deactivating this functionality.

After selecting IPv6 authentication mode, click Save and then confirm.

When restarting devices or when there is communication with ACS, Huawei models will automatically update settings. If no option is set, the previous standard, which uses DHCP, valid only for Huawei devices, will be applied.

Filter Application

You can filter by period to identify the dates when IPv6 was activated on a device, and also sort by date to check how many devices were configured. Status View

  • Blue status indicates active monitoring
  • Proportion of devices with active IPv6 without IPv6 and with IPv6 disabled
  • List of devices suitable for IPv6 monitoring

Additional details

  • Click More information to see details by template and request support if a given model has IPv6 support
  • Visualize activations per period IPv6 Temporary Deactivation
  1. Access the desired device
  2. Go to: Connectivity tab → Internet → Disable IPv6
  3. Set a waiting time for automatic reactivation

Best Practices

  1. Regularly monitor supply status
  2. Check devices without IPv6 support and consider updates
  3. Use temporary deactivation with caution for specific tests

Troubleshooting

  • What? If a device does not receive IPv6, check its compatibility
  • What? For devices that lose IPv6 after restarting, use option On restart
  • Contact support to map data from devices without apparent IPv6 support

Security considerations

  • What? Implement IPv6-specific security policies
  • What? Keep device firmware up to date for IPv6 appropriate support

Final considerations

Automatic provisioning of IPv6 in IXC ACS is a powerful tool for modernizing and optimizing network management. By automating IPv6 configuration, providers can ensure a smooth and efficient transition to this essential technology, improving network performance and preparing for future demands.
